Kumeyaay Wedding Pots feature two drinking spouts to symbolize the joining of two lives. These are hand-crafted by contemporary artisans using traditional practices, and no two are alike. The process includes gathering and preparing the clay, building and shaping the coiled pot, gathering plants to make the colored dyes, constructing yucca brushes, and making the clay slip. While some pots are fired in kilns, some are still fired in the traditional way in an outside fire pit, covering their vessels with large potsherds and dried sheep dung which creates a variety of tones in the patina. The pottery bakes in these fire pits for many hours, to produce a hard finish.
