Sa’will

$3,100.00

A sa’will is a type of woven plate made with kwa’naay or juncus textilis grass. The fine weave makes these able to be used to winnow grains from their chaff. Today, sa’will are still made the traditional way by contemporary Kumeyaay artisans. They vary in size and design – no two are exactly alike. These often take many months to complete, and are prized for their fine texture and patterns. The designs often depict animals – the plate shown here depicts an awii, or snake – a symbol of protection in Kumeyaay culture.
